        About Us
    Welcome to BCIS
    From the Head of School
Welcome to the Beijing City International School (BCIS) website. I hope it provides you with helpful information about our vibrant school community.
Our school’s mission is “to educate and empower students to be compassionate and inspired people, who act for the good of all and for the sustainable development of the world”. This has given rise to our school motto: “Empowering and inspiring through challenge and compassion”. We are a school that focuses on academic excellence and confidence building, while nurturing in our students a strong sense of social and environmental responsibility.
We celebrate the fact that each student is different, as a person and as a learner, and we aim to offer a personalized education specifically designed to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of each child.
BCIS is a not-for-profit, independent, co-educational day school offering an international curriculum for Nursery to Grade 12 students. The school occupies a first class, purpose-built facility in Beijing’s central business district (CBD). As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School we are authorized to teach all three IB programmes (Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma) and we are accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). We are also a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS), the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS), and the International Schools Athletic Conference, Beijing-Tianjin (ISAC).
The warm and inclusive nature of our school culture is something we are particularly proud of and work hard to maintain. At the same time we place great emphasis on rigorous academic enquiry, making extensive use of information technology in the classroom. Our balanced programme of curricular and co-curricular offerings is becoming stronger year by year.
Please enjoy exploring our website. Whether you are a prospective student, parent or teacher I hope you find what you need to know about our school. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have, and if you are in the locality we would be delighted to welcome you and give you a tour of the campus. My office is located in the Elementary School lobby, so please call in. I look forward to meeting you in person and hope that you may join our BCIS community.
    With warm regards,

    Elementary School (N–G5)
Welcome to the Elementary School at Beijing City International School.
I warmly welcome you to the Elementary School section of BCIS, which serves students from Nursery to Grade 5.
The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is the framework for our international curriculum. The early years and primary years set the foundation for future learning and we take the responsibility of caring for your children very seriously. We truly believe that learning takes place when we make connections to personal experiences and build upon prior knowledge and understanding. We place emphasis on the learning of concepts, skills and attitudes, as well as knowledge, as we prepare our students for their journey into secondary education and beyond.
Not only do we have an excellent inquiry-based programme at BCIS, we also have an experienced, dedicated faculty, excellent facilities and a desire to ensure that all of our students are seen as individuals and are given opportunities to reach their highest levels. Our experienced staff, who hail from various countries, backgrounds and systems, are highly qualified and experienced and together bring many years of experience to BCIS. I am proud to work with a team of teachers who are so dedicated to their profession.
We encourage a balance of experiences at BCIS and you will discover that there is always a variety of events and learning opportunities taking place within our school, which encompass academic, art, music, sport and so much more.
Learning is best achieved when we are active in the learning process and I encourage our parents to be active in their child's learning whilst at BCIS.
    Kind regards
    Julie Lawton

        Curriculum
As an IB World School, we challenge our students to ask questions, solve problems, learn skills and be creative. Our teachers use research-based strategies to ensure outstanding student learning.
The primary objective of the IB programme is to provide a world-class education that prepares students of different linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds with the intellectual, social, and critical perspectives necessary for university and indeed the rest of their lives.
Beyond intellectual rigour and high academic standards, strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship. The profile of the IB student is that of a critical and compassionate thinker, an informed participant in local and world affairs, who values the shared humanity that binds all people together. The programme also instills respect for the variety of cultures and attitudes that makes up our world.
In the spirit of internationalism, and in recognition of our host country, students from Pre-K through to G10 are required to learn Chinese in addition to the language of instruction (English).
Every school year we organise a series of workshops to help parents understand our curriculum. These workshops focus not only on what but also on how we teach and learn at BCIS.
