The International Montessori School of Beijing

  About Us

        About Us
Caroline Chen, MSB’s founding principal, started teaching in Beijing in 1990 when she set up a Montessori classroom in the Royal Norwegian Embassy for a group of 10 pupils. In this single classroom, the vision of MSB grew out of her desire to create an unique Kindergarten and Elementary school aimed at providing excellent education in the English and Chinese language for Beijing’s international community.
In 1992, she created a Kindergarten at The China World Trade Center, and one year later, established MSB’s Elementary Programme at Beijing Lufthansa Center. For over 10 years, the Beijing Diplomatic Language and Cultural Centre in Sanlitun served as MSB’s central base to the school’s other Kindergarten and Elementary campuses at River Gardens and Beijing Riviera. As MSB students grew in numbers, MSB’s curriculum expanded to offer a choice of an English only based education or a complete full-immersion dual language English-Mandarin Programme. Today, MSB is well respected in the Beijing and international educational community for providing a very strong academic programme in both its English-Only and Dual-Language Programmes.
In 2012, MSB established its new and beautiful campus at Riviera, consolidating all of its campuses on the same grounds. The school now serves over 400 children aged 1 to 12, representing more than 40 nationalities, all receiving the excellent education in English and Chinese language that Caroline envisioned.
MSB is a non-profit organisation fully registered with the Chinese Ministry of Education Beijing Education Bureau. It has been in existence for over 20 years. MSB is an affiliate member of the American Montessori Society (AMS), which represents over 6,000 Montessori schools worldwide and oversees the MACTE Montessori educational standards on an international level.

  Education Service

        Education Service
The academic programmes at MSB are designed around the capabilities of each child. This allows us to best accommodate their individual needs and enable them to reach their greatest potential. As a result, the children at MSB not only display high standards of grace and courtesy, cooperation, self-control and respect, but also great individual aptitude, curiosity and skill.
The MSB curriculum is carefully designed to build a strong foundation in academics, while promoting social, emotional, moral and physical development. Our method of teaching encourages children to become independent and motivated learners, with a solid work ethic and sound decision-making skills. These core programme values are supported in all classrooms in the English-Only and the Dual-Language Programmes at all age levels.
At MSB, the English-Only Programme is offered from Nursery to Grade 6 (ages 1 to 12) and the Dual- Language Programme is offered from Kindergarten all the way to Upper Elementary (ages 3-12).
    English-Only Programme
The English-Only Programme is a full-day English programme, in which all materials and instruction is in English.
At the Reception and Elementary levels, the children are also introduced to some Chinese, known as Chinese as an Additional Language (CAL), through circle time or language lessons a few times per week. In the Kindergarten English-Only Programme, CAL is optional.
    Dual-Language Programme: English & Chinese
The Dual-Language Programme is a half-day English programme coupled with a half-day full-immersion Chinese programme. Each dual-language class has 2 separate classrooms: one English only with English materials, and one Chinese only, with Chinese materials. Half way through the day, after lunch, the children switch between the two classrooms. The classrooms have separate lead teachers: a native English speaker for the English classroom and a native Chinese speaker for the Chinese classroom, who work together to create a seamless curriculum.
At the Kindergarten level, children in the Dual-Language Programme alternate monthly between starting with English or Chinese in the mornings. The classroom the children begin the school year in, is considered their homeroom.
At the Reception and Elementary levels, the children spend the morning in their English classrooms and the afternoon in their dedicated Chinese classrooms where all work/lessons are conducted in Chinese. The children also receive daily intensive Chinese instruction with a separate teacher. These groups are typically small, encouraging student-teacher interaction.

  Features and Advantages

        Features and Advantages
    Commitment to the Child
At MSB, every child is perceived and treated as an individual. We realise that every child is different, and fortunately, our Montessori-based curriculum enables our educators to tailor each lesson to the specific needs and interests of each pupil. For that reason, our children are always engaged and challenged. Our well designed classrooms, along with our low student-teacher ratios—4:1 in Preschool, 6:1 in Reception and 8:1 in Elementary—allow us to bring out the best in each child at every age level, from Nursery to Grade 6.
    A Warm and Nurturing Environment
At MSB, we take great pride in providing a happy and nurturing environment for our children. We are a small school with a strong sense of community, which allows us to get to know each and every child and focus on their individual needs and interests. Our warm and spacious classrooms are full of natural light, having been created with the child in mind, in accordance with the Montessori philosophy. Visitors will see our children interacting positively with their peers, either working together or helping one another out, and receiving individualized attention from the teachers. Whilst we have high expectations for our students, we are dedicated to ensuring that their self-esteem and confidence grow with each success in the classroom. The smiling faces of MSB students are a tribute to our dedication.
    High Academic Achievements
At MSB, we take pride in our high academic standards and are known throughout Beijing international school community for our respectful, independent and intelligent children. We stress the fundamentals in the classroom and ensure that every child, whether in our English or Dual-Language programmes, receives a well established foundation in reading, writing and mathematics. Our unique classroom environment and Montessori-based learning approach allow children to work above their grade levels and excel in any and all areas they possess a strong aptitude in. We prepare our children for every future success, and for that reason, many pupils who move on from our school to traditional teaching environments are not only well prepared, but also find their first year at a new school to be a review of what they have already learned with us at MSB (see Testimonials).
    A Montessori-Based Education
MSB offers students Montessori-based learning, taking the best of what Montessori has to offer and coupling it with the needs of a child living in an international environment in Beijing. Our teaching style draws from the traditional principles outlined by Dr. Maria Montessori, but presents them in an updated framework relevant to today’s children. As a result, our children grow to become respectful and confident individuals, capable of independent learning and critical thinking.
All of our classrooms are designed according to Montessori principles and equipped with a full set of age-appropriate Montessori materials that children can access at any time. For the younger children, these materials help to develop their five senses, spatial awareness, and fine and gross motor skills, while advancing their knowledge of concrete principles. In Elementary, these materials serve to reinforce children’s’ abilities in writing, mathematics and abstract thinking. Best of all, at MSB, these materials have been translated and adapted for use in the Chinese classrooms, ensuring a seamless transition from English to Chinese for children enrolled in our Dual-Language Programme.
An Excellent Dual Language English-Mandarin Programme
MSB’s full-immersion Dual Language Programme is unique in Beijing. Since its establishment over nine years ago, the programme has provided countless children all the benefits of receiving a full education in English and Chinese, side by side.
MSB students enrolled in the Dual Language Programme spend half their day in an English-only classroom and the other half in a Chinese-only environment. Within the Chinese classroom, all lessons and communications are conducted solely in Mandarin and are an extension of what is learned in the English classroom. This not only promotes language learning, but also reinforces the subjects taught. For that reason, our English and Chinese Dual-Language lead teachers work closely together to ensure the children receive a well-rounded and complete curriculum that meets MSB's high academic standards in both English and Chinese.
The Dual Language Programme is currently available for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5, with the expansion to Grade 6 planned for the 2014/2015 school year.
    Emphasis on Important Life Skills
Education is more than academic learning. Strong study and work habits, independent thinking, the ability to follow a task to completion, focus, time management and teamwork are all characteristics needed for academic and career success. As a result, the core principles of the Montessori-based approach are more relevant today than ever before, and we at MSB incorporate them into the child’s school day both inside and outside the classroom.
At MSB, we begin teaching these skills as early as Nursery. At the same time, in line with the Montessori approach, we teach our children to think independently, communicate effectively, innovate, collaborate and problem solve. That is why it is no surprise to us that many of today’s political and business leaders were the products of a Montessori education and credit their Montessori years for their success (SeeWhat do P.Diddy, Sergey Brin, and Peter Drucker Have In Common?).
By the time our children reach Grade 6, they will have been equipped with a very strong skill set giving them a great advantage in life, regardless of where they go.
    Experienced, Dedicated and Long-term Staff
At MSB, we know that our biggest strength lies with our outstanding teachers. Our teaching staff (meet MSB’s academic team) is very experienced, and many have taught at the school since its earliest years. This provides a sense of stability and continuity to the MSB environment. Our lead teachers, as well as our teaching assistants in both the English and Chinese classrooms are all fully qualified teachers, and our ongoing professional development and training program ensures that they are continually exposed to new developments in childhood education and develop expertise in new fields.

Applicants accepted for admission will receive an invoice accompanying the acceptance letter. If payment is not made by the date specified in the invoice, the applicant’s place will be forfeited and may be given to another applicant. No child will be allowed to attend class until his/her school fees have been paid.
    PROBATIONARY REVIEW
All students are subject to a probationary period lasting 30 attended school days. During this period the school reserves the right to withdraw a child’s acceptance in the event that MSB does not have adequate resources to satisfy the child’s needs. This may include, but is not limited to, necessity for additional psychological evaluation, advanced EAL services, individualised curriculum, a dedicated teacher or shadow, etc. In the event that the school is unable to meet the needs of the child a full refund, minus the first month of tuition, will be given.

    LEARNING SUPPORT
During the admission process, students with learning difficulties are evaluated on an individual basis to determine if the school can provide for their needs. MSB requires applicants with previously identified learning needs to provide past school records, evaluations and accurate information of multi-disciplinary services in use. Whilst MSB believes wholeheartedly in supporting children with developmental challenges, the school cannot provide comprehensive special education services and is not able to admit students with severe learning, language or behavioural needs. For those students who are admitted with learning support needs, a fee will be levied to cover all additional manpower costs.
    Children Identified With Additional Needs
As a reputable and experienced school, MSB will do its utmost to assist children who are identified with additional needs. In the event that the school deems a child in need of additional assistance during the course of the school year, MSB will work with the parents to provide the best care and support for their child. Additional needs include, but are not limited to: regular learning support, speech therapy, psycho-educational evaluation, a full-time shadow, extra/additional EAL, etc.
Should the parents of a child who has been identified as needing any additional assistance, as per examples above, refuse to agree to MSB’s plan for support, the school reserves the right to withdraw the child from the school.
Costs for all additional services for the current year are available from the finance department.
    Student Advancement
Any student who does not complete a full school year due to late enrollment at MSB should not expect to be advanced the following year. These students are expected to take the recommendations of the teaching staff for advancement.

The school provides school bus service to transport students to and from school. Bus routes service families in most areas of Beijing, although we cannot guarantee that all locations in the city can be serviced.
